I have done an ok job at this.

In a world where everyone wants to be a faster reader, I want to be a slower reader. If you know me at all, you know I am an analog girl through and through. I love simple pen and paper. It feels more tangible and memorable to me, and I really just love the scratchy/smooth feeling of it. I have completely reverted to documenting my reading journey via pen and paper like we used to do in elementary school, and it is fulfilling my deepest desires of being a slower reader.

Of course, you can do this with any of the tens of unused journals you have in your home, but I opted for the ever-so beautiful A4 leather journal from Paper Republic. They have made handcrafted leather journals in Vienna since 2012 with a really fabulous team that appreciates each individual customer. I filmed an unboxing in a recent vlog with all the extra details. Timestamp: 1:03:44 😉.

All of this to say, I think I found a system that works for me and what I need regarding my most beloved hobby. I have even resorted to writing reviews by hand and writing only in cursive! This is all absolutely riveting to me, haha.

You’re Not Enough (and That’s Ok) by Allie Beth Stuckey: I spoke about this in my recent video, but this book is such a powerful reminder of self-forgetfulness. This was my second time reading this and ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ both times!!

The Night Is Normal: A Guide through Spiritual Pain by Alicia Britt Chole: This book still has me reeling. I am still somewhat unsure about what I read, and simultaneously greatly impacted. I’ve never heard anyone else speak to disillusionment and how that can cause a straight-up panic spiral, but wow, wow, wow, I was so blessed by this book and felt so seen and comforted.

Raising Emotionally Strong Boys by David Thomas: Some notes I took While reading this -

• Boys typically blame others instead of taking personal responsibility.

• healthy ownership vs shame/blame

• wellbeing > happiness

• Boys shouldn’t have power over you; they need their parents to be strong. Don’t submit to their “needs” for their momentary happiness, but stay locked in for their long-term well-being.

• Boys benefit from visuals

• character > happiness

• Practice makes progress, not perfection

• Ask your kids what they need/want - could be staying up later, alone time, snuggling, going to the zoo, more time to play, more time outside, more time inside, etc.

• Ask boys who they want to be vs what they want to do

The Surrogate Mother by Freida McFadden: Rated this ⭐️⭐️. I really don’t want to give up on Freida, but I was not impressed by this one.

Eating: I heard someone say our parents were the casserole generation and we are the bowl generation and I couldn’t agree more - I love a good bowl! Lately I’m loving ground beef seasoned with Siete Mild Taco Seasoning, sweet potato, avocado, cheese, and a drizzle of hot honey 🍯

Playing: SO.MUCH.SUDOKU. I played my first game of Sudoku last week and now have a full-fledged obsession. I play on the NYT Games app, but they switch out the puzzles at odd times so I ordered this book so I can play at any time without worrying that the puzzle will reset.

Obsessed With: These have NO BUSINESS being this good!!

Recommending: I’ve been getting questions to link this floss again bc I’m always hyping it, but truly the best floss ever!! My dentist was so impressed with how clean my teeth were, so I can be trusted 💅

Treating Myself: New heating pad! My old one kept shutting off, and it was super annoying. This one is SO good - not too hot but not too cool. You definitely don’t want to overuse a heating pad, but on the low setting, this one is perfect.

• My birthday (28) is tomorrow!! I think this is the first birthday I’ve had in a while where I’m feeling pretty chill, and it’s most likely because I’m so busy with SAHM life that I haven’t had time to spiral over getting older. I mean, I don’t necessarily spiral because of aging, but more so over the fact that the time that passes I can never get back, and that thought makes me so emo 😭. *This is self-forgetfulness in action*

The Magician’s Nephew - Current read aloud I’m doing with the boys!

The Compound - I’m about 45 pages in and SAT!!! They say it’s a mix between Love Island and Big Brother - wow I did not know how badly I needed a book set in a dating show.

Breaking Dawn - Listening to this through Libby (an app that gives you access to your library’s catalog)

No More Boring Bible Study - My sweet friend Faith Womack wrote a book!! It’s not out yet, but you can preorder now. I know this book will change how people interact with the Bible and subsequently change their life.

playing: so much Catan. Fun fact about me I am painfully competitive and will actually get pissed over this game 🥰 (I’m working on my self control don’t worry)

obsessed with: Amazon released a Kindle Colorsoft Kids TODAY!!! My kids love theirs so much and it comes with a year of Amazon Kids+ which gives them access to so many books.

recommending: Remembering you can change your mind at any time. It doesn’t matter if yesterday you said you would never do X,Y,Z and today you want to do X,Y,Z. There’s no need to artificially box yourself in. You can change your mind at any time.

treating myself: New house shoes! My little sister was roasting me last time we were together - she literally could not believe my house shoes looked the way they did!!!

• I can’t believe summer break is sooo close to being over!! I will say I’m already loving our decision to homeschool because I don’t have the back to school scarries!

• I’m always being asked what went into our decision to homeschool and I believeeee I chatted a bit about this in a vlog but I totally don’t mind chatting about it again and a bit more in depth.

  For the longest time I always said I would never be a homeschooling mom. I feared giving up my career in order to be a stay at home parent - essentially giving up my life, and truthfully it was never a lifestyle I felt drawn to. When Karter was in preschool we had a disagreement with his school and I remember wanting to sweep it under the rug because I didn’t want to be “stuck” at home. After getting through the pandemic with a newborn and a 2 year old I was ready for a break! Regardless, my idolization of comfort was shocking to me. I’d say this was the first incident that made me start to reevaluate my role as a mother and the sacrifices that are necessary. We soon moved both of our boys from this daycare to a Christian private school.

  After a few years at said private school we were in a great groove! We got closer with our community, I absolutely adored their teachers, and the boys loved the consistency of being at a proper school. We just couldn’t shake the fact that the boys were away from us for about seven hours a day and when they started sports we felt stretched thin with all of our commitments. In 2024 as fall break was coming to an end our entire family felt we weren’t ready to return to the 7am school grind. If you have school aged kids you know how hectic the mornings can get with school lunches, uniforms, class assignments, etc. We just loved the slower pace we were able to nestle into while school was on break.

  The decision to homeschool came pretty quickly after that. I had been praying that God would soften my heart to this idea and help me not hold my comfort above all. I asked Him to give me the posture of a willing mind and open hands. I would even visualize my mind opening and my fists unclenching. Sometimes just the willingness to something mades decision making a little bit easier! Kaelin was also a safe place I could take all of my very real fears. He always let me air my grievances and met me with encouragement and understanding. I am a very all in or all out person - once I felt peace about homeschooling there was no going back.

  I went back and forth on if I wanted to include the boys in this decision and ultimately decided to bring it up nonchalantly and they both loved the idea! If you’re wanting an idea on how to broach the subject with your kids here’s what I asked my kids! “On a scale how much do you like school? A lot, a medium amount, or a little bit” I won’t share their answers but I will say their response was shocking and gave me that extra push to lock in on homeschool.

  There were other deciding factors such as how long the school day is and what they are actually doing in that time. We wondered, was there a way their time could be better spent? We are big believers in time being one of our greatest assets! This sort of spiraled into other conversations revolving around socialization, bullying, societal pressures, popularity, hobbies, comparison, our own experiences in a public school setting. We were quickly unnerved and felt everything we knew about the school system was just that - a system. We actively fight against being cogs in a machine or just another bot in the matrix.

  Hopefully this answered any lingering questions you had around why we decided to homeschool. Of course, this is only my perspective and doesn’t include the many things Kaelin added to the conversation. I’m thankful for a partner that will flip our life upside down to do best by our family and our children. I don’t take it for granted ❤️.

reading: The Wedding People! I’m about 55% completed with this book and it is the most wild, jaw dropping, laugh out loud book I’ve read in a very long time. Espach’s writing reminds me of Sally Rooney’s in the way she writes characters and gives them blunt personalities. It’s freeing to read about characters that act on their impulses and do what ever the heck they want!

eating: Still in love with Alani’s new and improved Watermelon Wave 🍉 also my entire family is obsessed with this honey chipotle crockpot recipe!

2. I was invited to a Valentine’s Day cocktail/dinner party! I need help on which dress I should wear. The dress code is cocktail attire in pinks, reds, and lilacs! I’m leaning toward the first dress, but would love to know what y’all thing!

3. Kaelin and I are still watching Severance! There’s a new episode every friday for season 2 and it’s sooo good. I love discussing all of our theories and how different they are lol I of course always think mine are more right!!!

reading: Iron Flame in preparation for Onyx Storm coming out the 21st! I just finished Fourth Wing for the second time and it got the 5 ⭐️ stamp of approval from me!

eating: I’m disappointed in myself… I normally have a fun treat/recipe but I’ve been on my health grind! I have been drinking lots of Alanis lately though! The new and improved watermelon wave is sooo good!

2. How precious is this!! I really need to get on my sewing game so I can make it myself.

3. I started Severance (apple tv) today… ummm most strange show ever but also I can’t look away?!?!?? Have any of you watched it? Thoughts?

4. I received some questions on Instagram as to how we started implementing less screen time with our kids so I will leave all my tips below! It’s nothing new, just sharing what we did. If you didn’t know, we only allow the boys to watch tv or play video games on the weekend.

• during the pandemic we took the tv down. At first I thought it was weird, but it made our home so peaceful and encouraged reading! Through the years we’ve had seasons we leave it up and seasons we take it down.

• letting my kids be bored and learn imaginative play

• prioritize trips to the park and library

• I bought blocks, magnatiles, puzzles, books, playdoh, etc.

• Now that we live in a house, lots of outside time

Now I don’t put any effort into keeping the boundaries because its become such a routine and lifestyle! We want to encourage a childhood of play and freedom, not one where their personalities and interests are shaped by shows.

5. Guys I really need to learn to crochet in the next three months frfr!!! I’ve been putting it off soo much and I don’t know why when I know I will love doing it while I listen to an audiobook. If you have any tips or videos that were helpful to you pleaseeee send my way! At the end of the year I want to have a handful (about 4) of new hobbies and the way to get there is small consistent steps throughout the year, not one big leap at the end.

6. Since so many of you shared that your 2025 goal is to be more disciplined in Bible reading I have to share a major win (praise God!!!) that will hopefully inspire you to keep pressing on! I always have to fight to read my Bible consistently, but ever since I’ve prayed daily for God to be my strength and asking him for perseverance I have experienced such a weight lifted off. It feels desirable no matter if I do it the first hour of my morning or the last hour of my night, this has been such a sweet gift! I write out each prayer daily and prioritize praying scripture, it doesn’t have to be super long, mine range in length! I’m sure deleting TikTok has also contributed to the ease, but I’m not going to rant right now lol.

7. I’m going to try prioritizing spending my scroll time on Pinterest lol. This probably seems weird, but I actually set aside specific time for a nice, cozy brain off scroll! I think it may inspire my artistic side and to start those hobbies!!

First, I want to acknowledge everyone who has built a following on the platform and relies on it for their livelihood or even just enjoys it as a hobby. In 2017, our YouTube channel with over a million subscribers was suddenly demonetized due to a glitch during a time we called the “adpocalypse”. We lost out on months of income with no promises from YouTube that it would be monetized again. From someone who has experienced to some extent what you are currently experiencing… I am so sorry that this impending ban has caused stress, loss of sleep, and income. If it isn’t banned we can all take a sigh of relief, but if it is know I am thinking of you and remaining hopeful for your next adventure!

Fair warning, as I expand on my reasons for deleting TikTok I’m going to cut it straight, but please know these are only my opinions and although I have made the decision to delete it, I’m not passing judgment on anyone who loves the app. Let’s start with my biggest reason - it’s a huge waste of time! When I think about the person I want to be in 6 months, she does not waste even an hour on a brainrot app. I want to be wise and intellectually stimulated! I want to write well and experience life outside of a screen. I want to feel deeply and be moved by stories of the people I meet in real life! I want to serve my community and not be deceived into thinking I’m doing more by ~increasing my empathy~ through short-form videos. I think social media does a great job of distracting us and making us feel just good enough about ourselves that we never change or notice we’re wasting our lives away.

My other main reason is the impact on society and culture. I’m Christian, so I believe in protecting the purity of our youth and shielding them from a world that tells them to grow up faster.I find it jarring and heartbreaking when I’m in public and young girls are copying provocative TikTok dances or using social media slang. I’ve also seen many stats on how children are being impacted by social media and it isn’t good.

The remaining reasons are: the large culture of bullying on the app, dishonesty from creators, and the increase of rage bait. People are willing to do whatever is necessary to build a following and I just don’t care to witness it or take part. Bring back influencing taking hard work, grit, and purpose!

Although TikTok has many positives, I’m just not sure they outweigh the negatives for me. I am still figuring out exactly how I feel, but so far these are my thoughts. Regardless of the results, I have banned TikTok before it could ban me.

Jennette McCurdy chronicles her life as a Nickelodeon star while living in a home riddled with abuse and uncertainty and how all of that impacted the rest of her life. I related to her dark humor and directness!

• Finding Me by Viola Davis

Another fabulous memoir! Absolutely devastating yet hopeful and encouraging and made me feel understood. I love how Davis shows grace against all odds, selflessness, and grit! One of my only 6 star reads of 2024!

• A Summer Affair by Elin Hilderbrand

• The Perfect Couple by Elin Hilderbrand

• 28 Summers by Elin Hilderbrand

I’m going to group all of Hilderbrand’s novels together for he sake of reducing repetitiveness. If you haven’t read anything by Elin you are missing out! The characters are so well rounded with the right amount of drama and tug on your heartstrings. She knows how to keep you engaged by infusing her stories with life lessons.

• The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

I LOVE stories that highlight choice and how those choices lead to consequences whether good or bad. Nora is transported to the Midnight Library where each book represents an alternate path had she made different decisions. We follow her as she is moved through each alternate reality and the conclusions she reaches in each one.

• The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

World War II historical fiction following two sisters and the devastating sacrifices they make living in Nazi occupied France in 1939. I’ll just say, this one had me absolutely bawling my eyes out.

• Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett

Faeries, a bad-tempered professor, and a mission to uncover the secrets of the hidden ones. So fun and I found it to be very cozy yet exhilarating.

• One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig

One of my favorite fantasy books! The characters, magic system, setting… all perfection! There is a mist (darkness) that is covering the kingdom of Blunder and in order to rid the town of the mist they must gather twelve Providence Cards! There is so much more to this story, but I don’t want to give too much away.

• Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance

This is J.D. Vance’s memoir! Very encouraging and mostly about his poor upbringing and the steps he took to make his life his own. A story of you aren’t where you came from or who your parents are and the importance of upward mobility!

• Same Time Next Summer by Annabel Monaghan

• Summer Romance by Annabel Monaghan

I’m going to group Annabel Monaghan’s novels as well! These are both romances and she is an incredible writer! I’m not a huge romance reader, so this is kinda a big deal that I love these so much lol. There are LOTS of underline-able quotes!

• The Women by Kristin Hannah

Vietnam war historical fiction that will rip your heart out. That’s all you need to know.

• The Paradise Problem by Christina Lauren

Anna and West get married out of convenience in order to receive subsidized housing in college. They divorce… or so she thought, but when West’s family requires him to be happily married for five years to cash in on his one-hundred-million-dollar inheritance, she has to continue on in the marriage! This has a tropical setting, family drama, and a laugh out loud plot.

• The Naturals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

YA novel about a group of adolescence that have special gifts the FBI uses to catch serial killers and solve cases. So fun and although YA, a little dark!

• Normal People by Sally Rooney

What a difficult task to describe a Sally Rooney novel!!! Her writing is deep and multifaceted and quirky and relatable. You really just have to read it to understand the hype!

2. In 2024 my family really focused on cooking at home more. The food budget was SCARY!!! In order to ensure we would eat at home more, we grocery shopped every Sunday (with some exceptions), and that made certain we had food to cook. As a result we significantly cut down on our eating out budget, had more meals as a family around the table, ate more vegetables, and feel empowered to make other life changing habits. In 2025 I’m focusing on keeping a tidy home year round and not letting everything pile up and become overwhelming. For now, I’m planning on cleaning one room a day and hopefully this works and I can stick with it!

3. I am SO excited because the book club girlies are planning our first in person meet up 🤭 It’s looking like a veryyyy NYC bookish fall 🍁 Here is where you can join if you want be apart of the book club!

4. TikTok may be getting banned in the US, but regardless it’s getting banned from my life. I’m so over the wasted time like actually so over it. How are y’all feeling about the TikTok ban?

5. One of my biggest insecurities is my intellect, which is very interesting because I simultaneously know I’m very smart?!!?!? Insecurities make 0 sense, but it’s something I really need to overcome in 2025, so here are 5 steps/truths I came up with to work on this. It’s a balance of not putting my worth in my actions and also recognizing that God values logic and order and there are things I can do/read to honor Him in my thought life.

   • Read more books that will stretch my brain in areas I care about. (Some people want to be smarter regarding Science, I don’t really care about that so that will not be my focus.) Here are the 3 books I’m going to start with and I’ll be filming a reading vlog including them!

   • Stop playing the comparison game, I am not supposed to think or be like other people. God chose me at my lowest, He is not disappointed in me, He is not wishing I was smarter, He just wants me.

   • Care less about other people’s opinions! How intellectual I am says NOTHING about my worth.

   • Don’t idolize intellect.

   • Proverbs 1:7 - The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. Saturate my mind with actual truth ❤️

In an effort to tackle one of my biggest and scariest resolutions, I have made the move to Substack. If you are unfamiliar or new, I used to send a 7 Things Sunday in my email newsletter where I shared 7 tidbits about life, what I’m learning, listening to, reading, my hot takes, and anything else I think of. I want to bring that back for good, but also have a place where I can write freely… we can call this my ✨Carrie Bradshaw era✨.

My biggest and most time sensitive 2025 resolution is to figure out if I want to continue being an author at this time in my life. I need to know if it’s a career I will truly enjoy and if I’m going to fail I’d rather fail fast and move on to something else! Substack feels way less formal, so my hope is that it will get me in the habit of getting ideas out of my head and down on paper (not really paper but you know what I mean). You don’t really know if you like something until you try… even if you’re bad at it. (and I’m sure for now… I will be very bad at it).

My plan is to continue my 7 Things series as I embark on the very daunting task of publishing my second book and sharing all that I’m learning in the process of writing a solo book (I published my first book with my husband!).
