I agree 100%. I don’t have social media besides tik tok and people always look at me funny when I tell them I don’t. I personally struggle with comparing myself to others, thinking I should be far along in life based off of what I see going on in other peoples lives and it’s draining. I’m better than I was before but social media can definitely make you think you suck when in reality we’re right where God wants us to be

I agree wholeheartedly. I told God this morning how freeing it is to rediscover my identity in him and think back on my childhood desires and interests that were stripped away from me once I became influenced by social media.

When I was younger (5th-6th grade), instagram and twitter were just beginning to take off and I immediately fell victim to people pleasing and basing my self-worth/confidence/esteem on likes and engagement. I can’t even imagine what it’s like for youth now, especially with the rise & popularity of tiktok. It honestly makes me sad.

I have no interest in spending my free time on social media. A quick scroll is fine, but I want to live REAL life. People are sick. People are dying. People are struggling. People have no hope. I want to impact and encourage my community and I can’t do that if my screen time is 90% social media.

I literally spent my whole day yesterday at the gym and then singing. At first, I was like, ‘girl you literally wasted your day’, then I thought, ‘I could have wasted my day away watching TV’. Anyways, we’re definitely on the same wavelength when it comes to the negative impact of social media.

I 100% agree with you! I deleted it in December & I have hopped back on for a day or 2. It’s an addiction that I don’t want any part of anymore. Instead I have been reading more and spending more time in prayer while homemaking 🫶

I love hearing your thoughts on this! I never had a tiktok, but find IG to be similar. I really resonate with how you talk about who you want to be in 6 months. Maybe there’s no ban on IG, but this has me considering if I need to ban it from my life 😅

Yes. This was so well articulated, Kyrah. I so appreciated reading your point of view! Thank you thank you thank you! I also agree 10000%. I deleted tik tok a few years ago for similar reasons.

"I want to be wise and intellectually stimulated! I want to write well and experience life outside of a screen. I want to feel deeply and be moved by stories of the people I meet in real life! I want to serve my community and not be deceived into thinking I’m doing more by ~increasing my empathy~ through short-form videos." Kyrah, this was such a well-written piece! Love that you made a statement about the person you want to be, and how the culture of TikTok does not align with that. I wonder how much we all could let go of if we started contemplating on the people we want to be and whether or not our actions are leading us there.

I’m so excited about disconnecting from TikTok! In a perspective of prioritizing myself I’m grateful for the ban and embarrassed that I haven’t had enough self-control to detach sooner. My hurt does hurt for the genuine and authentic creators who use the app to share their thoughts, support their passions, and as a source of income. I feel so drained, I know my attention span has taken a huge hit and I’m excited about the ability to redefine my hobbies. Regardless of if it gets saved or not after today, it will definitely be my last day.

I deleted it for the same reasons. I also caught myself being too invested in others lives, and the person I want to be goes out and makes memories and doesn’t live through other people on a screen. So I left pretty much all social media except the accounts I had to keep (work stuff)

Love it. I never downloaded tik tok just because I felt it would be addicting. I find myself off any social media platform (aside from YouTube) more and more as each day passes. Thank you for sharing !

I definitely agree with you and others as well! I deleted the app about a year ago and the only social media I have is “YouTube” but since then I’ve been learning and noticing things about myself in a positive way. I don’t have to think how others think or try to stay on top of trends or buy the next popular item. I’m all for it if you’re an active user but as a passive user time gets wasted away and I would feel such a heavy feeling when I closed the app than when I opened which required me to think deeper to find the root cause. For me, the cons outweighed the pros. Thanks for sharing Kyrah!

I agree 100%!! You can scroll for a minute and then next thing you know , you’ve been scrolling for HOURS. Your for you page can easily switch to things you actually like watching (like cooking videos , organization etc.) to straight drama between creators. High school drama might I add from ADULTS! It gets unenjoyable. Plus since this recent TikTok ban , creators are coming out saying that half the stuff they claimed to do , didn’t actually do it. Just made a video so that they could get views and a following. Social media has become a place of toxicity.. I miss when Instagram (because that’s the main one I had) was just us taking daily pictures of life instead of worrying how the picture looked and wanting to make sure it’s ’perfect’.

I never got the privilege of using the Tiktok app; however I completely agree with you concerning social media being a brain rot. Good for you for making that decision!!

I definitely agree. And that is so strong and adept to quit while you have a choice! Hope you see your life flowing with real moments and

unforgettable love!

My thoughts: Sometimes I live in a bubble, alone at home, where my newsfeed is dictating what I think is out in the world, and a part of me knows it’s a narrow curation built by trends and content I’ve spend .0005 seconds too long watching. HOWEVER, I recently have gotten a close look at young ladies, ranging for 13-18 years old, word for word dancing and singing to songs with lyrics I would never let family see me perform. Yet there they were groving to highly provocative content entertaining the tiny kiddos with their hype-ness. TikTok has got its grips in good with the younger groups. Shamefully, for me, TikTok AND IG (although I feel a tab bit more in control of what comes up, tab bit being not by much ;) ) have contributed to a whole lot a brainrot, second guessing my lifestyle, and stagnant, idle habits. The lack of censorship for these apps is crazy, because it’s the people that make it unsafe and the platform that can never keep up or it’s trying hard enough with the security. But there I am reading unhinged comments, viewing content contrary to my beliefs, letting anger rile me while I shut my phone closed, talking myself down from the polar opinion overload. Social media, in general, is chipping away at our individual thinking and productivity.

I totally understand your what you’re saying. I realized awhile ago that TikTok was taking so much time away from me & the youth! I tried setting a time limit on my phone, but it’s just not enough!
